Underlayment
Traditionally known as roofing felts (actually paper saturated with asphalt), the underlayment is installed between the roof deck and the asphalt shingles. It serves as a barrier that protects against water intrusion in case of torn or broken shingles. Proper installation is important, particularly in areas where the materials overlap; too long and it uses up a lot more material than necessary, too short and it makes it easy for wind-driven rain to get onto the roof deck.
CertainTeed’s Integrity Roof System® features utility-grade underlayments like the ShingleFelt® 30, as well as the fiberglass-reinforced felt underlayment Roofers’ Select® and the high-performance synthetic underlayment called DiamondDeck®.
Drip Edge and Flashing
Breaks in the roof’s surface, such as valleys, protrusions and dormers, are vulnerable to water intrusion, and require extra protection. Strips of metal called flashing are installed by roofers to protect and reinforce these areas. Some roofing systems feature adhesive-backed strips of material that bolster both underlayment and flashing; the CertainTeed Integrity Roof System features WinterGuard®.
Drip edges are similar pieces of metal installed along the roof edges that protects it from water intrusion caused by capillary action. This make sures that all rainwater goes straight to the gutters.
Starter Strips
Roof edges are not just vulnerable to water intrusion but also to wind damage. This is why, in addition to the aforementioned drip edge, specially designed starter strips help protect it against hurricane-force winds. Starter strips are basically shingles in roll form and serve as the first row of shingles. Special adhesives bolster the roofing nails; when properly installed, the roof edges can withstand hurricane-force winds. Manufacturer-certified contractors will supply starter strips that match the rest of the new roof.
