Raccoons can inflict damage on your roof without you even knowing about it. One way they can gain access high above your home is by climbing up your downspouts. This, unfortunately, adds another set of problems you have to deal with, from clogged gutters to health concerns.
To help keep these critters off your downspouts, Howard Roofing & Home Improvements compiled a list of things you can do.
1. Trim Tree Limbs
Tree branches growing too close to your roof and downspouts need to be trimmed. This is to cut off a path toward your roof. Professional roofers also suggest doing this to keep leaves and other organic materials from collecting on your roof or gutters. Always make sure that tree limbs do not extend over your roof to minimize damage caused by falling branches.
2. Pest Proof Trash Cans
One way to keep raccoons off your gutters and downspouts is to give them no reason to stay on your property. These raccoons are most likely smelling food in your yard and your trash may be a target. Eliminate their interest in your yard and they will no longer bother you. When taking out garbage bags full of trash and stuffing them in outside containers, make sure to close them securely with lids.
3. Keep Pet Food Indoors
Raccoons are nocturnal or are more active at night. If you often leave pet food and water outdoors, it might be time to stop that habit. Once these critters sense food during nighttime, they’ll be coming back to your property more and more. Bringing food and water indoors will deter them from visiting your property at night. Doing so will also eliminate any roofing problems caused by raccoons.
4. Install Pest Guards
If the steps above do not work, then you can install a pest guard. These are designed to wrap around your downspouts and trees. These often have nails, spikes or wire to poke raccoons attempting to climb. This helps make your downspouts impossible to climb.
